About
I am a newborn sci-fi/horror writing calf trying to get my knees to lock into place or, at the very least, avoid clocking my head on anything on the way down.
My professional writing career began at a now-defunct fashion magazine based in Japan. I have not been to Japan. I have apologized to my friends and family for the quality and content of the articles written there. Form apology letters are available upon request*.
After shaking off the shame of writing about panties with attached bows, I started my own politics and arts blog, Moue Magazine**. I wrote about American politics and sociological issues alongside a great group of writers. We got some notice- Guardian, Washington Post, Slate.com. But the 2008 primary season had weakened me and the healthcare debate was the straw that broke my camel spine. I left the magazine in summer of ‘09.
It seemed a natural progression from political writing to the world of scifi and horror.
Though I have been writing fiction since I was able to hold a pen and scratch word-like scribbles onto paper goods, this is the first time I’ve pursued publication.
* That’s a lie or a “fiction”.
**Parker Betz is a pen name. This is easily discovered if you follow that link. My birth name is Brandy Betz, which sounds like a German stripper turned romance novelist. The pen name isn’t any attempt at secrecy on my part (obviously) but rather the correction of a naming mistake my parents made 28 years ago.
(Parker comes from Dorothy Parker who was, by my estimation, badass.)
